My teams’ night in baseball, a couple reflections to sportswriters and some of my favorite baseball movies

26 Jul

Another night on the baseball diamond in the middle of summer. The Texas Rangers pulled one out over the struggling Boston Red Sox 5-3 in Texas to take two out of three in their series and Nelson Cruz had a game clinching home run in the eighth inning. The Rangers take a 5 game lead in the AL West over the Angels and Athletics who are competing for the two AL wildcard spots. Meanwhile the Red Sox fall 5 games out in the wildcard and Boston is struggling with their playoff chances but we’ll see.

In other action of interest to me the Pittsburgh Pirates salvaged a win in their series with the Chicago Cubs to remain atop the NL wild. card race and the Pirates are 2.5 games back of the Cincinatti Reds in the NL Central. The Cubs aren’t going to the playoffs this season and neither are the Milwaukee Brewers who lost their 6th game in a row all in heartbreaking fashion especially the last three in Philadelphia where they lost big late inning leads against the Phillies. Finally the Dodgers and the Cardinals are fighting for respect and to make the playoffs. The Cardinals pulled out a 3-2 win in 12 innings on a Rafeal Furcal base hit and spoiled the Dodgers debut of newly signed shortstop/third baseman Hanley Ramirez who they acquired from the Marlins.

Well that’s the night of my favorite teams in baseball and before I go I want to mention a few other things. First I want to support my friend Elichap with her new ELI Sportsblogger Facebook post and I hope it’s a great success. I also want to mention the late Jessica Ghawi a 24 year old sportsblogger who was gunned down in the recent Colorado movie shooting. She was also known as Jessica Redfield and had narrowly missed being killed in the Toronto shooting a month ago. It was a terrible tragedy along with all the other people who lost their lives or were injured or scarred in the shooting. All the tragedies were horrible and so sad of course but this Jessica girl was a sports writer and blogger with aspiring dreams like me and many of you so we’ll continue the dream in her honor. RIP Jessica Ghawi.

P.S. I’ve also been watching some of my favorite baseball movies. The Rookie starring Dennis Quaid about Texan pitcher Jimmy Morris who made the major leagues in his late 30s. Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barymorre about a Red Sox fan who tries to find a way to combine his Red Sox passion with romance. Great Fenway Park baseball shots in this movie. It makes you feel you’re at the game especially if you’ve never been there as I haven’t. The Natural with Robert Redford Roy Hobbs and do you know they play the Natural theme whenever a Texas Ranger player hits a home run at home. Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner is a wonderful baseball fantasy movie. It makes you want to go back to Iowa of all places and celebrate the simple roots of baseball with the baseball ghosts that inhabit there. These are my favorite baseball movies. What are some of yours and thanks always for reading. Talk soon. Bratman or as a friend of mine recently said just getting a little Paulosophy whatever that means lol. Thanks always for reading.

We are connected!! “) With all of us joining in on “our” Sportsblogger FB page…this is going to be fun!! Always ~ Eli-B Now I just have to squeeze in time to write my own! LOL… The Pirates did win one. Phillies just doing the Phillies thing. The Cardinals came out smellin’ like a Rose against the Dodger’s, 3 out of 4. It will be interesting to see who fills the Wild Card spots ~ especially now that two games have been added.
